La réputation de The Roots, malgré un dernier album en demi teinte, n’est plus à prouver. Celle d’Okayplayer, leur label, non plus. Et ce n’est pas Jill Scott, Common, Cody Chesnutt ou Erykah Badu qui diront le contraire. Avec “True Notes Vol 1”, c’est le combo de Philadelphie et plus particulièrement son batteur ?uestlove qui jouent ici aux directeurs artistiques. Et de quelle manière! Car la vision du futur du hip hop par The Roots en 19 étapes vaut le détour. Ici se côtoient artistes déjà accomplis ou révélations qui contribuent encore à la crédibilité qu’il reste au genre. Ainsi, Aceyalone, Madlib, Dilated People, Hieroglyphics, Nicolay & Supastition, Blackalicious, Little Brother, The Chapter, RJD2 et surtout The Roots tirent leur épingle de ce petit jeu. Ce qui n’enlève rien aux prestations de leurs collègues. Vous l’avez compris, “True Notes” donne dans le classique, conscient de surcroît et s’avère être un parfait panorama qualitatif. Alors, adeptes de real hip hop, suivez le chemin du legendary Roots crew..
